In 2016 Chanelle and Deolu met for lunch in Farringdon where they both worked at the time. As usual they talked about what they had been up to since they last spoke, the many layers and beauty of Solange’s A Seat at the Table and how real the struggle was in trying to get tickets to see the West End production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Very typically, the conversation became about the lack of black history taught in schools and the narrowed depiction of black culture in mainstream media, only this time they created a plan to do something to make a difference.
A few cheeky glasses of wine later and I AM was born.
With a decade of friendship between them and a shared passion to promote the richness, beauty and achievements of black people, they created I AM; a home to celebrate black culture and hidden black history.
